NCESS Opens Applications for 10 Project Scientist-I Posts

The National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) has released an official recruitment notification inviting applications for the position of Project Scientist-I. These posts are offered on a contractual basis with tenure up to 31st March 2026.

Details of Available Project Scientist-I Posts at NCESS

There are 10 Project Scientist-I vacancies, each focusing on a specific research area. All positions require a Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with at least 60% marks, and most encourage applicants with a PhD and field or instrumentation experience.

  • Seismology: Candidates should have an M.Sc./M.Tech in Seismology or Geophysics. Desirable qualifications include PhD and experience in data modelling and seismological instrumentation.
  • Potential Field Geophysics: This position demands specialization in potential field studies, including experience in gravimeter and marine magnetometer operation.
  • Near Surface Geophysics: Preference will be given to those with experience in electrical resistivity and ground penetrating radar.
  • Igneous Petrology/Geochemistry: Applicants with research experience and familiarity with instruments like XRF and ICP-MS are preferred.
  • Metamorphic Petrology/Structural Geology: Candidates with expertise in EPMA and fluid inclusion studies will be ideal.
  • Sedimentology: Requires experience in field data generation and sedimentological/geochemical analysis.
  • Marine Geology and Oceanography: Involves conducting surveys and real-time coastal data monitoring. Candidates with cruise experience and knowledge of modelling will be prioritized.
  • Environmental Chemistry/Hydrogeology: Preference for those experienced with geochemical tracers, isotope analysis, and hydrological modelling using software like MODFLOW or MIKE SHE.
  • Atmospheric Sciences: Candidates with a strong programming background and experience in handling formats like NetCDF or GRIB are desirable.
  • Civil Engineering: This role involves project planning and management. M.Tech in construction-related fields and experience with civil engineering software is preferred.

NCESS Project Scientists Salary, Age Limit, and Other Benefits

The monthly remuneration is ₹56,000 plus HRA. Candidates are also eligible for a 5% increment every two years, subject to performance review. The upper age limit for all positions is 35 years as on the last date of application submission.

Age relaxation is applicable for SC/ST/OBC and other eligible categories as per Government of India norms.

The posts are purely temporary and project-based, but the selected candidates will play a significant role in national Earth science research programs. The responsibilities include:

NCESS Selection Procedure 2025

Eligible candidates will be shortlisted based on their academic qualifications, relevant experience, and desirable skills. Shortlisted candidates will be called for a written test and/or interview, depending on the number of applicants.
