GATE Eligibility Criteria

The GATE 2026 Eligibility Criteria outlines the minimum educational qualifications and other requirements that candidates must meet before applying. Applicants must either be in the 3rd year or higher of an eligible degree program or have already completed it. Candidates with equivalent qualifications from approved professional societies or foreign universities are also eligible.

Educational Qualification

To apply for GATE 2026, you must either be in the 3rd year or higher of an approved degree program or have already completed it. Degrees can be in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities from recognized institutions. Below is the list of accepted qualifications explained simply:

B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm.
If you have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, or Pharmacy (4 years after 12th or 3 years after a B.Sc./Diploma), you can apply if you are in the 3rd year or above, or if you have already graduated.

B.Arch.
Students with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (5 years), Naval Architecture (4 years), or Planning (4 years) are eligible from the 3rd year onwards or if they have completed the degree.

B.Sc. (Research) / B.S.
If you are in a Bachelor’s degree program in Science (Post-Diploma or 4 years after 12th), you can apply from the 3rd year onwards or after completion.

Pharm.D. (after 10+2)
Students in the 6-year professional Pharmacy doctoral program (including 1 year of internship) can apply if they are in the 3rd to 6th year, or if they have completed the program.

M.B.B.S. / B.D.S. / B.V.Sc.
For medical degrees like MBBS, BDS, or BVSc, students in the 5th semester or higher, or those who have already finished, can apply.

M.Sc. / M.A. / MCA or Equivalent
Master’s degree students in Arts, Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Applications, or equivalent fields can apply from the 1st year onwards or after completion.

Int. M.E. / M.Tech. (Post-B.Sc.)
Students in a 4-year integrated Master’s degree program in Engineering/Technology (after B.Sc.) can apply from the 1st to the 4th year, or if they have finished the course.

Int. M.E. / M.Tech. / M.Pharm. or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2)
If you are in a 5-year integrated or dual degree program in Engineering, Technology, or Pharmacy, you can apply from the 3rd to 5th year or after completion.

B.Sc. / B.A. / B.Com.
Students in a 3-year Bachelor’s program in Science, Arts, or Commerce can apply in the 3rd year or after graduation.

Int. M.Sc. / Int. B.S.–M.S.
Students in a 5-year integrated M.Sc. or B.S.–M.S. program can apply from the 3rd year onwards or after finishing the course.

Professional Society Examinations
If you have completed Section A or equivalent of a professional society examination (like AMIE, AMICE, IETE) approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC as equal to a B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch., you are eligible.

B.Sc. (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry)
Students in a 4-year degree program in Agriculture, Horticulture, or Forestry can apply from the 3rd or 4th year, or after graduation.

GATE 2026 Professional Society Recognition

Some candidates may have studied through professional societies instead of regular colleges. Examples of such societies are:

  • The Institution of Engineers (India) – IE
  • The Institution of Civil Engineers – ICE
  • The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers – IETE
  • The Aeronautical Society of India – AeSI
  • The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers – IIChE
  • The Indian Institute of Metals – IIM
  • The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers – IIIE

If you have a qualification from any of these societies, it will only be accepted for GATE 2026 if:

  • The examination you passed is approved by MoE, AICTE, UGC, or UPSC
  • And it is considered equal to a B.E., B.Tech., or B.Arch. degree.

Important Note:
If you joined such a professional society before May 31, 2013 and it had permanent recognition from the government at that time, you will be considered eligible for GATE 2026.

GATE 2026 Nationality

GATE 2026 is open to candidates of all nationalities. Indian citizens are eligible to apply without any additional requirements apart from the educational qualifications.
